Nova wished she could erase the emotions flowing inside of her. She’d tried to forget her childhood, all that loss. The present was what mattered. As a leader, she needed to take care of her people. That was her destiny.

Having nothing was easier when there was nothing more to have.

But then Kane happened.

“I think I’ll always fly to you.”

His words had terrified her. They came with complications attached.

When he’d said them, she had seen the surprised looks on his family’s faces and heard the teasing. She’d also glimpsed the reluctance on Kane’s. He hadn’t wanted to confess. She couldn’t blame him. Confessing affection for her would be as embarrassing as her having to tell the Revolutionists about him.

“I’m sorry for what we put you through,” Kane said, not coming closer. “I’m sorry for what I put you through. It was never my intention to make you cry.”

“You didn’t make me cry. Memories made me cry. There is a reason people bury the past.” Nova stayed within the shade of the large tree, hidden. “That is where my love for my brother resided. Buried. It’s where I needed it to stay. I can’t save him from himself. Whom I loved doesn’t exist anymore. Doyen is just someone I used to know. My family is gone. I need it to remain that way.”

“You might find it very little consolation, but now that it’s been proven you don’t plan on sabotaging relations with the Federation, we know you can be trusted.” Kane took the smallest step toward her as if waiting for her reaction. “I hope this means we’ll be able to move forward with finding an agreeable path.”

“I want to trust you,” Nova admitted. However, even if she believed their intentions, the other Cysgodians would not. Fear had taken root long ago and it was in deep.

“Would you like me to get Salena? You can have her ask me anything you wish.” He began to turn.

Nova reacted on impulse. She grabbed his arm to stop him. The shock of his warmth against her fingers sent a wave of awareness into her body. “Don’t.”

The word hung between them as she held his arm. His eyes met her gaze, and she knew before she started pulling him into the shade with her that she would kiss him again. Whatever this feeling was between them, it was stronger than her sense of duty. It surged in great bursts of air, forcing her to go where it wished. She could no longer fight it than she could resist the urge to breathe. She could try to hold her breath, but the burn inside her would become too great, and she would need to gasp for air.

It felt natural for their lips to meet, like the first gasp to soothe a deprived body. They instantly picked up where they’d left off in the alley. Everything faded but that moment. She needed to feel the promise of his touch, no matter how fleeting.

Nova kept ahold of him until her back hit against the bubbly texture of the bark.
